Cllr Mrs Victoria Borwick - Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea

September 2006

After the summer holidays with my family, I am back in London to find a number of planning issues.

Planning

Tesco's Tower as it has been nicknamed (100 Cromwell Road) is the proposal to put 27 storeys on top of the existing Tesco car park and to provide 435 residential apartments.

Obviously this is will a significant building and naturally residents are concerned about the height of the development, and the fact that there is no local infrastructure to support the residents - local schools, doctors, dentists, or space to play. How far would you have to walk to find a swing?

If you want to get involved contact Richard Darley or Michael Duncan: michaelduncan@btinternet.com, or Hilary Temple at the Cromwell Road Residents Association: hiltemp@aol.com

The Odeon on Kensington High Street is also under threat of closure and planning permission will be sought for a residential development and hopefully some cinema in the sub-basement. The Odeon is not a listed building, and has been turned down for listing. Further information is available from the developers Northacre/Minerva at odeon@northacre.co.uk or telephone: 07786 324264. or Edwardes Square Residents association - Sarah Palmer: sp@edwardessquare.com

The Radnor Arms near Charles House, just off Kensington High Street are also concerned about their future, so do pop in and try one of their speciality beers and help their campaign.

Holland Park School - this project is due to come to the Planning committee very soon, and there are still very mixed views as to whether it should be rebuilt from scratch or refurbished. If it is to be re-built, to finance this the Council will need to sell off some of the land, reducing the amount available for the school. More information from Campden Hill Residents Association, David White: davidklwhite@hotmail.com

Transport

Leyland Decorators merchants and the other shops at the West end of Kensington High Street have been having great problems with Transport for London. The loading and waiting times are different on both sides of the street, and you may have seen this campaign highlighted in the Evening Standard last week. Do you know any other retailers who are suffering under this 3 min loading rule from TfL, although the signs say 20 minutes!

Local Events

The Chelsea Antiques Fair, at Chelsea Town Hall, celebrates it 100 Fair this week and I had the opportunity of opening the Fair, and congratulating the dealers on their attractive displays, and more importantly, having all the antiques clearly labelled, and vetted, so visitors can buy with confidence. Buy a new car and its value decreases as you drive out of the showroom, but buy an antique and you are buying a piece of history with unique craftsmanship, which hopefully you will enjoy for years to come. Much better than a trip to Ikea!

The Notting Hill Housing Trust had a well attended open day, where residents could ask questions about their building and repairs issues, as well as get employment advice, and find out about other local resources, and meet their local police officers. NHHT had plenty of staff around from each of their departments and it was helpful to residents to actually meet the representatives from NHHT.

Chelsea Community Development Network: If you live in Chelsea, near the Worlds End and would like to get involved with your local community or have a group that you would like to promote, do contact communityrelations@rbkc.gov.uk. The group meets quarterly and discusses important local issues, police, safety, housing, legal advice and so forth.
