Cllr Mrs Victoria Borwick - Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea

August 2006

Lyons Enquiry

As a local Councillor I went to a meeting with Sir Michael Lyons, where together with councillors from all over the country who represented the whole range of political opinion, we discussed the future role, function and funding of local government, and in particular the implications for the future role of councillors.   This was one of a series of discussions that Sir Michael is holding around the country as part of his local government review.  The government have commissioned him to undertake an independent inquiry to consider the case for changes to the present system of local government funding in England and to make recommendations, including on the reform of Council tax. If you are interested in knowing more about this review, see the website www.lyonsinquiry.org.uk.

Local Police

I met our Borough Commander, Dominic Clout who gave me an excellent briefing on Kensington & Chelsea, obviously he has a view and experience of other Boroughs too, and so this was very informative. Commander Clout takes a zero tolerance view on crime and has been successful in reducing crime in Kensington & Chelsea. Overall there has been a reduction in reported crime of 12.7%, with a particular reduction in vehicle crime. As a guide line - how many robberies would you think there would be in a 24 hour period in the whole borough of Kensington & Chelsea? The average is 2, snatch crime is 4 in a 24 hour period.

In Abingdon Ward, our Police Community Support Officers are led by Sergeant Don Casey, and in addition we currently have 1 PC and 3 Police Community Support Officers. I recently walked the streets with Sergeant Casey and he showed me an example of vehicle crime on a small Peugeot car - be warned - do not leave any valuables visible for thieves. Recently there have also been thefts through open windows in this hot weather. Have you had a problem with car crime or other crime issues?

If you would like to contact our local sergeant his email is: Don.Casey@met.pnn.police.uk, and his address:
