London is a major capital city, competing in the global economy for finance, business services and tourism. The Mayor and Assembly have an important role to ensure that London maintains its international influence.
London's GDP of 280 billion pounds a year, 30% of the UK's GDP, is larger than some countries. London's residents and businesses provide a significant subsidy to other parts of the country.
There are many individual bodies promoting London, not only the City and Institutions; also London First, the London Tourist board and so forth.
Policies must be business led to promote economic development, and to reinforce London's position as the financial capital of Europe.
With the Olympics there will be tremendous opportunity for business expansion and increasing the importance of London in the global economy. We must ensure that businesses are confident of building their presence in London and that the quality of life is improved so that London is once again the first choice for major corporate headquarters. This investment would continue to strengthen London’s economy.
